Although hurricane season officially starts June 1, we here at Santee Cooper prepare all year long.
Line crews continually check and upgrade equipment, which is especially useful along the beaches where the salt air can eat away at our gear. The same goes for tree crews who are looking for any vegetation that could cause problems for our lines if a storm comes.
In anticipation of the season starting in June, Santee Cooper managers and engineers recently met to review our emergency action plan. We take “lessons learned” from every storm, and our plan continuously evolves. Our teams work with other public utilities to make sure if we need extra crews, we have them. In fact, we recently sent five crews to help the City of Tallahassee after it suffered extreme damage from tornadoes.
When a storm is predicted to head this way, we know it’s all hands on deck. We’re ready to work the duration of the storm and after until everyone’s power is restored.
Over the past few years, we’ve put technology in place that helps us restore power more quickly. Smart meters let us know if your power is out. With our smart grid, we can fix electrical problems before we roll out a truck . Text messages let you know when your power is out and when it will be restored after you sign up for text updates on MEL .
Restoring your power is important to us so we’ll work as safely and quickly as we can to make sure you have the power you rely on.
