Empowering South Carolina’s Educators: Inside the Summer Energy Educators Institute

This summer, Santee Cooper’s Energy Educators Institute (EEI) proudly welcomed 44 enthusiastic teachers from 29 schools across 17 South Carolina counties. Representing educators from pre-K through 12th grade, this diverse group teaches a wide array of subjects – ranging from science and engineering to business, Spanish, and even auto-collision repair.

Held over three sessions in June and July, the three-week course was specifically designed to deepen educators’ understanding of the utility industry. The ultimate goal is to equip teachers with the knowledge and tools needed to inspire their students’ interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.

Hands-On Learning and Eye-Opening Experiences

Each day of the institute offered a new opportunity for teachers to learn about Santee Cooper and the energy sector through dynamic, hands-on activities. Participants toured the Cross Generating Station and the Lake Moultrie Regional Water System, paddled through the scenic Old Santee Canal Park and watched a high-voltage Power Hazard Awareness Demonstration (PHAD) to better grasp vital safety practices.

The PHAD presentation, which highlights the hidden dangers of underground utility hazards and overhead power lines, left a lasting impression on many attendees. Participants frequently noted how eye-opening the safety demonstrations were, with many veteran educators expressing surprise at the crucial, life-saving information they learned about everyday electrical hazards they had previously overlooked.

Bringing Energy Education Back to the Classroom

Beyond the tours and demonstrations, educators spent valuable time reflecting on their experiences and crafting actionable lesson plans. One popular activity that teachers plan to introduce to their students involves constructing small model houses using “insulation station” kits – a practical lesson in energy efficiency that educators can easily order for their own classrooms.

The feedback from all 44 participating teachers was overwhelmingly positive, with several expressing disappointment that they couldn’t return for another session next summer! For many, the program completely shifted their perspective on the utility industry.

Attendees collectively expressed a newfound respect for the complex, behind-the-scenes work required to improve the quality of life across South Carolina. Many noted that the deep expertise, scholarship, and passion of Santee Cooper employees stood out as a major highlight, leaving the teachers inspired to bring that same enthusiasm for energy and STEM back to their classrooms.
