MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Santee Cooper team members are preparing for the potential effects that Tuesday’s storm may have on Santee Cooper’s service territory. Approximately 2 million South Carolinians depend on the state-owned electric and water utility as their power source, either directly or through the state’s electric cooperatives.
As of noon today, Santee Cooper went to Operating Condition (OpCon) 3 alert status. This means there is a significant threat to Santee Cooper’s electric system, but effects are still uncertain. At OpCon 3, the utility is continuing to check and fuel vehicles, including line trucks, ensure communications equipment is in proper working order, take inventory and procure supplies as needed, such as utility poles, electric transformers and associated equipment.
Our generating stations are securing potential wind-borne objects, prepping sites in anticipation of heavy rain, and planning for extra staffing as needed. Our transmission department has tree crews on a staggered schedule to accommodate a projected 12-hour wind event and will adjust crews around the system as needed.
“Santee Cooper employees are readying for the storm, ensuring we are prepared to begin repairs that may be necessary as soon as we safely can,” said Vicky Budreau, Chief Customer Officer.
