As South Carolina moves from winter into early spring, changing temperatures and seasonal storms can create new electrical safety risks. At Santee Cooper, keeping our customers and communities safe is a year-round priority. A few simple steps can help reduce hazards during this time of year.
Use Space Heaters with Care
Cold mornings can increase space heater use. Keep heaters at least three feet away from furniture and curtains, plug them directly into a wall outlet and turn them off when leaving the room or going to sleep.
Be Prepared for Seasonal Storms
Late winter and early spring storms can bring high winds and lightning. Always stay away from downed power lines and assume they are energized. During severe weather, unplug sensitive electronics to help protect them from power surges.
Call 811 Before You Dig
As outdoor projects pick up, remember to call 811 at least three business days before digging. This free service helps locate underground utilities and prevents damage to electrical lines.
Keep a Safe Distance from Power Lines
Maintain at least 10 feet of clearance between ladders, tools and overhead power lines. Never attempt to trim trees near power lines; instead, contact Santee Cooper so trained crews can handle the work safely.
Inspect Cords and Outlets
Seasonal changes are a good time to check your home’s electrical system. Replace damaged cords, avoid overloading outlets, and test GFCI outlets in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoor areas.
By staying aware and taking seasonal precautions, customers can help prevent electrical injuries, fires and outages. Santee Cooper is committed to providing reliable power while helping South Carolinians stay safe as the seasons change.
